Autumn Air, Autumn Sky, Autumn Yoga

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

Ah Autumn - the season of shorter but beautiful mild evenings, the amazing colours of Nature all around & that lovely feeling of snuggling up in warmer clothes.

Thoughts of a Sunday afternoon walk through the beautiful autumn leaves.

Warmed up afterwards with a bowl of delicious soothing healthy homemade soup.

Then curling up on the couch with a great book, movie or podcast.

It's also the time of year to lay the personal groundwork to help keep us in tip-top shape for the colder times ahead. Read on for some simple tips for Autumn that'll help get us into some resilience-building healthy practices & doable lifestyle routines ahead of winter.

Autumn is regarded as a 'Vata' season in Ayurvedic lifestyle terms; one where qualities such as dry, rough, windy, erratic, cool, subtle & clear abound, inside us but also around us. So it's a great time to start looking after the joints & keep everything moving & juicy for the colder months ahead ❄️.

Stay warm - yes, start to wrap & rug up but also keep up with your regular exercise regime & your regular Yoga class or practice. A brisk walk with the dog & kids, a nice jog with friends through the glorious Autumn sunshine (or even the rain!), kicking through carpets of colourful leaves 🍃🍂🍁 or a cruisey bike ride with your partner along the canal all keep the blood pumping, boost your immune system & help stave off the winter blues.

Food - think root vegetable soups like the one shown here (lightly spiced Sweet Potato, Carrot & Lentil - see recipe in this post), crisp sweet carrots, crunchy apples, fresh or stewed with warming spices like cinnamon, ginger & cardamom, a Moroccan-style chickpea & root vegetable stew, fresh homemade ginger tea with maybe a homemade seedy nutty flapjack & other warm, delectable & wholesome foods that Mother Nature generously provides for us & as always, just at the right time 🌎.

Sinuses/lungs - try a Neti Pot to help keep your sinuses clear & reduce inflammation (or for the same effect but a more modern & convenient version, try NeilMed Sinus Rinse, available in Boots & other pharmacies). Also keep up with your Pranayama practices; being able to breathe deeply, fully & calmly is an all-year round mind-body toolkit must-have.

Meditation - the colder months provide us with a natural opportunity to turn inwards, so take a little time to experience stillness & engage with yourself fully & quietly even for a few minutes, whether first thing in the morning or later in the evening. Relaxation techniques like meditation have been shown to dramatically decrease the need for healthcare visits & interventions, which is a great reason to pull out the Yoga mat or meditation cushion...

Yoga asana practice - think warming Sun Salutations, Side Stretches, Back Bends & Twists. Try a morning class for a change; connecting with others is a great way to rouse ourselves out of the bed in the Autumn months & also, any Yoga class is a great way to get out & about & moving & stay in touch with people in the community too.

* Yoga Classes can still be joined into - just sign up for a 6, 10 or Unlimited Class Pass.
