7 Super Benefits of Yoga

October 23, 2017

There is so much news, headlines, info & research out there now about the many benefits of Yoga. Which is great. But it’s also a bit well busy & hard sometimes to try & sort out the bombast from the real McCoy, the headlines from the hustle.

What REALLY stacks up? Which topics or areas of interest have been thoroughly researched so that we can reasonably know that what we’re being told is accurate, helpful & kosher?

Here are just 7 areas of recent research focus that will be of interest to many of us:

Yoga & Back Pain

Don’t take back pain lying down!

There is “strong evidence for short-term effectiveness & moderate evidence for long-term effectiveness of yoga for chronic low-back pain.”

Yoga helps us build core strength, stretch & lengthen our spine, undoing all that 'sit-asana' so many of us are locked into: sitting & compressing our spines in car-seats, couches, desk-chairs you name it - so much of our modern lifestyle can lead to back strain & pain. Yoga over time assists in undoing those unhealthy patterns & building a healthier stronger spine.

Yoga & Stress/Anxiety

A mindful way of inviting some calm into our busy-bee beings:

“for many patients dealing with depression, anxiety, or stress, Yoga may be a very appealing way to better manage symptoms.”

“By reducing perceived stress and anxiety, Yoga appears to modulate stress response systems. This, in turn, decreases physiological arousal — for example, reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure & easing respiration. There is also evidence that Yoga practices help increase heart rate variability, an indicator of the body's ability to respond to stress more flexibly.”

We breathe, we move, we slow down.

We turn off or even leave the phones at home. There is just us & our mat - a refuge away from the busyness of modern life - no screens, no stimuli. There is just the practice, the poses, the peace.

Yoga & Osteoarthritis/Joint Pain

 De-creak those joints with Yoga:

“In a 2015 study, women with rheumatoid arthritis reported improvements in their physical health, walking ability, pain levels, energy, and mood & had significantly fewer swollen & tender joints, after doing two hour-long Yoga classes a week for eight weeks.

Much of a rounded Yoga practice will focus on bringing ease into joints, ligaments, tendons & muscles; lubricating from within through targeted & gentle but effective movement. Significant ease is also gained through the ability to learn how to truly, deeply relax and learning to become more mindful and compassionate about our bodies and our practice.

Yoga & our Bones

Them bones them bones need Yog-a-Om…

Studies have shown the efficacy of a Yoga practice for re-establishing bone strength & so helping to alleviate the symptoms of osteoporosis. And you are never too old to begin.

Yoga & our Immune System

Get a pep in your immune-system step:

A recent Norwegian study established that “data suggest that Yoga & related practices result in rapid gene expression alterations which may be the basis for their longer term cell biological & higher level health effects.”

‘After four-hour yoga sessions…showed that the Yoga practice changed the expression of 111 genes in circulating immune cells. In contrast, music & walking-based relaxation changed the expression of 38 genes.’

In plain English, one’s immune system gets a ‘boost’ through the practice of Yoga. Neat eh!

Yoga & Sleep

Better zzz’s with the help of Yoga:

Researchers from Harvard found that eight weeks of daily Yoga significantly improved sleep quality for people with insomnia. And another study found that twice-weekly Yoga sessions helped cancer survivors sleep better & feel less fatigued (I can vouch for this). This can be attributed to Yoga’s ability to help people deal with stress.

Yoga & our Brain

Get smarter with Yoga? Why yes!

Practicing brief sessions of Hatha Yoga & mindfulness meditation can significantly improve brain function & energy levels, according to a new study.

'Hatha Yoga is one of the most common styles of Yoga practiced in Western countries. It involves physical postures & breathing exercises combined with meditation. Mindfulness mediation involves observing thoughts, emotions & body sensations with openness & acceptance.

"Although the meditative aspect might be even more important than the physical posing for improving executive functions, there are additional benefits to Hatha Yoga including improvements in flexibility & strength," said Hall (one of the researchers). "These benefits may make Hatha Yoga superior to meditation alone, in terms of overall health benefits."
